Recognizing strength and building on it

Meet Siegfried Ebner

Head of Innovation Unit Devices & Technologies

I started at Grünenthal in 2002 as a project leader for Versatis® and was in charge of this project until its submission. From 2005 until 2009 I was head of staff in Project Management, followed by building up a new staff function for Business Process Management. Then, in 2012, I received the opportunity to steer the Corporate Alliance Management Group within the CD&L organization. When in I was asked again in 2015 to join R&D to help develop the strategy for our journey into the future, this led to my current role as Head of the Innovation Unit Devices & Technologies.

From my journey until today, I’d like to mention just three highlights. Without a doubt, Versatis® is one of our strongest brands, and I have been lucky to be part of the team who created the foundation for that success story. My change to Alliance Management was an extraordinary opportunity: I am very grateful that my management trusted and believed in, and that I could prove myself in a new field outside R&D and broaden my perspective. Last, but not least: my current position in the Innovation Unit Devices & Technologies. It is very challenging but also very satisfying to be chosen as a person to build up a new corporate pillar from scratch.

“I am convinced that companies need to reinvent themselves from time to time. The basis for that is to embark into innovation and new ways of doing things.”

Head of Innovation Unit Devices & Technologies

It’s opportunities like these that drive me: the prospect to shape and design the future. The chance to recognize strengths and to build on them – for me it’s inspiring. I think this enables a company to move boundaries with an acceptable risk-taking approach. I am convinced that companies need to reinvent themselves from time to time. The basis for that is to embark into innovation and new ways of doing things.

Together with my team we are building up a new area for R&D in the space of Devices and Technologies. This is super interesting, diverse but also complex. We have projects in our hands that enable us to deliver life-changing products to our patients in the near future. This required us to focus and to deliver – because nothing is more convincing than success. Besides that we are looking into other opportunities that fit into our portfolio: together with our commercial colleagues we have the chance to build up new business for Grünenthal which will provide our company more options and concrete starting points for diversification.
